10 White Essentials to Wear Beyond Labor Day

Tuesday, September 4, 2018

Let’s talk color: white, in specific. Now that Labor Day has come and gone, we can address the question lingering in our minds. Is wearing white still appropriate after the holiday synonymous as summer’s (unofficial) end?

We spoke with Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute on the antiquated fashion rule. “White was historically considered to be reserved for weddings—primarily for the bride—and resort wear in the summer months,” she says. “It was also ‘officially approved’ for summer garden parties, active tennis wear, pristine white sneakers and any other casual daytime wear.” More recently, winter white has been popularized and the lines between seasons have become increasingly blurry.

So, the answer is yes, absolutely, you can wear white year-round. “To an extent, we always have,” says Eiseman. “Think of a sleek satin gown and freshwater pearls for formal wear, a white silk tie against a darker shirt, and crisp white shirts for both men and women.” Here, we rounded up 10 white essentials for anytime, anywhere.
