“The space is grand yet incredibly raw,” mused Alan Cumming, looking down from the top of the dramatic, nine story, unrestored Financial District landmark that has seemingly been discovered only recently as a venue for the fashionably fabulous. Any previous fetes, however, functioned more as dress rehearsals to this blow-out bash, which boasted a mind-numbing roster of bold faced attendees, from Sarah Jessica Parker and Julianne Moore to Kanye West and Chace Crawford; models old and new (Helena Christensen, Trish Goff, Stella Tennant, Joan Smalls, and Nicole Trunfio); designers like Richard Chai, Maria Cornejo, Olivier Theyskens, and Alexander Wang; and too many editors, bloggers, and fashion circuit staples to mention.
A number of the celebrities (West, Mena Suvari, Leigh Lezark, and model/fellow Belgian Hanne Gaby Odiele, who changed tops mid-fete) wore pieces from the capsule collection, which is a re-edition of Margiela’s iconic men’s and women’s looks from the past 23 years (the age of the fashion house). The rest of the fashion hungry crowd had to visit the top floor, where guests could shop the collection weeks before it hits H&M stores on November 15. The dressing room lines were so long that most shoppers didn’t bother to try on their wares. “I’m buying two sizes of everything. It’s certainly cheap enough,” confessed one party guest. Each garment is labeled with a tag indicating the season from which it originated.
The piece de resistance of the evening came courtesy of Belgian choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and members of her troupe, who danced on sand covered squares throughout the space, dramatically placing a collection piece on each one. The dancing took place on the ground floor, but the venue’s huge atrium ensured that even the late arrivals ringing up their purchases on nine had a premium view. The dance concluded with a shower of silver confetti, and DJ Mike Simonetti took over the reins. The crowd was primed to dance – and shop some more.
