On Monday, October 2, HMQ Silvia and HRH Princess Madeleine of Sweden, philanthropists, chief executives, U.N. leaders and celebrities gathered together at the World Childhood Foundation USA Thank You Gala at Cipriani.

This year’s gala honored Melinda Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Amina Mohammed, UN Deputy Secretary-General; and Monika Heimbold, Chair of The Heimbold Foundation. In addition, Childhood USA honored Safe Horizon, which assists victims of domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault and human trafficking throughout New York’s five boroughs.

“The work of the World Childhood Foundation USA is of critical importance in the battle to save the world’s children from sexual abuse and violence,” said Heimbold. “We must guarantee that every child reaches his or her potential as the world’s future depends on them.”

Also in attendance were Malin Akerman and Jack Donnelly; and Joe Jonas, who surprised the crowd with a performance.

Earlier that day, The Queen spoke to the U.N. about the progress that has been made since the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals, which seeks to better the lives of children, on September 25, 2015.

“The Convention of the Rights of the Child remains the most widely ratified of all UN conventions,” she said. “Now that this convention has been complemented by Sustainable Development Goal16.2—which calls for ending abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of violence and torture of children by 2030—we have an unprecedented opportunity to intensify our collective efforts.”

Her Majesty Queen Silvia of Sweden founded the World Childhood Foundation in 1999. The organization seeks to help children living in social, emotional and material poverty through prevention, intervention and education efforts.
