A Heavenly Escape

Friday, August 25, 2017

The small town of St. Michaels, Maryland, plays a big part in history. During the War of 1812, St. Michaels became known as the Town That Fooled the British, when residents created the illusion of a skyline by placing lanterns in the treetops. Further North, navy commender Oliver Hazard Perry’s legend grew when he stopped the British at Lake Erie, coining the phrase “Don’t give up the ship!” In 1816 his purser Samuel Hambleton built Perry Cabin in St. Michaels, modeling it after Captain Perry’s seafaring quarters. Now a hotel called the Inn at Perry Cabin by Belmond, it has been expanded, updated and refreshed, marrying maritime charm with modern luxury.

New to the Inn at Perry Cabin is a fleet of luxury yachts, offering passengers a number of options for sailing excursions. We enjoyed a two-hour sail around Chesapeake Bay aboard the Stargazer, a Friendship 40 yacht. Motoring out of the harbor, Captain Jason Pinter cut the engine. The wind took over powering Stargazer, and I took over steering. Captain Jason claims he didn’t order the bald eagle that flew overhead, but no one believed him.

An Intimate Setting

That’s what Maryland does! Parts of the 2005 movie Wedding Crashers were filmed at the Inn at Perry Cabin. Like the fictitious Cleary family, our group arrived by yacht, enjoying the Inn’s new “Skip the Bridge” transfer, where guests board the Hinckley Yacht at Annapolis—just a 2.5-hour train ride from New York—and enjoy a luxurious, traffic-free ride across the Chesapeake, complete with champagne and a cheese platter.

Keep Calm

And come to St. Michaels. The Inn at Perry Cabin offers a number of ways to relax, from a massage in the Linden Spa to a dip in the heated outdoor pool or a leisurely bike ride into the nearby town. There’s nowhere I feel more at home than on the water, so I took the afternoon to stand-up paddleboard around the harbor. It’s hard to beat a view like this!

Eating Local

Chef Ken MacDonald joined the team last year, and he brought with him a passion for farm to table cooking. He sources his ingredients from no further than 150 miles away, and soon the Inn will have a fully functional vegetable garden on site. MacDonald also recently persuaded the Inn to purchase a wood-fired pizza oven. New York slice, you’ve met your match.

Coming Up: From September 22–24, the Inn at Perry Cabin will host the 2017 St. Michaels Concours d’Elegance classic car show.
