The Lauders don’t quit. Last Friday’s Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation’s Ninth Annual Symposium & Luncheon ‘ Hope on the Horizon’  honoring CEO David Weinreb of the Howard Hughes Corporation was a blockbuster. Co-Chaired by Leonard Lauder and Ronald Lauder, the record-breaking event raised over $1.6 Million and was attended by over 400 guests.

Nine-time Emmy Award winner and ADDF Board member, Paula Zahn, played host and noted “Alzheimer’s is increasingly becoming more common as the population ages, and more of us personally, will be affected by this devastating disease. With hope, and continued support of the science, we will get closer to a cure.” Ms. Zahn’s mother is one of the 50 million people worldwide with Alzheimer’s disease.

ADDF Co-Founder Leonard A. Lauder welcomed guests to the lunch and noted while there remains no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, there is hope in drug discovery. Mr. Lauder got some laughs as he cited one of his early investments in finding a cure. He shared that his aunt had had Alzheimer’s and  “ I went to see her doctor who said ‘Just give me a million dollars and I’ll cure Alzheimer’s’. I gave him a million dollars…I never even got a thank you note. He’s retired happily”.

Joining his brother, Co-Chairman Ronald S. Lauder, quipped, “ For thirty years I’ve been wondering where that million dollars went”. Both then presented the Charles Evans Award to Weinreb, for his leadership and outstanding support of Alzheimer’s research.

And the highlight of the day was the rousing tribute that Neil Weinreb, David’s father, shared in honor of his wife, a victim of dementia. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house after a video of David Weinreb serenading his mother was shown.
