The Guggenheim was full of more than just paintings on Wednesday night for its annual gala pre-party. The prelude to the museum’s more formal gala the next day, the pre-party has become known as a fun, festive fete in its own right. Nearly 700 guests, including Tiffany Zabludowicz and Anne Huntington (both featured in AVENUE’s new piece on young women in the art world) circled the museum’s lobby and ramps, enjoying the acclaimed, controversial new exhibition “Art and China after 1989: Theater of the World” and a DJ set by Kindness.

The evening’s biggest stars, though, were Este, Danielle and Alana Haim of the rock group HAIM. “We’re freaked out, it’s so beautiful!” yelled out middle sister Danielle. The group ripped through a setlist of their best-loved songs before closing with a soulful cover of Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down,” to which they invited guests to sing along.

Wednesday’s gala was also a celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. Since 1937, the Foundation has been dedicated to promoting the arts through its ever-expanding global network of museums. The gala, and the benefit the day after, helped raise more than $2 million.

Although the arts remain underfunded in many parts of the world today, parties like the Guggenheim’s are a reminder that there are still art-lovers out there, and that the creative spark can never be extinguished. As the Haim sisters sang in their song “Falling”:

Don’t stop, no, I’ll never give up
