“I was lucky to have a strong mother—a mother who told me that it was a privilege to be a woman,” said designer, icon and philanthropist Diane von Furstenberg on April 7th at the United Nations. She was speaking to an extraordinary, bright, (and very well dressed) crowd in the celebration of the 7th Annual DVF Awards.

Musician Justine Skye kicked off the evening on a positive note, as she filled the room with upbeat energy during a performance of her hit “Don’t Worry.”

Hosted by von Furstenberg and media maven Tina Brown, this year’s event marked yet another unforgettable moment, and presented awards to five inspiring women. Wakami president and founder Maria Pacheco and Uganda’s deputy national coordinator for the prevention of trafficking in persons and the training manager at the directorate of citizenship and immigration control Agnes Igoye were honored with International Awards for advancing the social, economic, and political position of women in their countries; co-founder and CEO of I AM THAT GIRL Emily Greener, was honored with the People’s Choice Award, which was chosen by popular vote on dvfawards.com; award-winning playwright Sarah Jones was honored with the Inspiration Award for demonstrating extraordinary strength and courage in the face of adversity and is now using her experience and influence to bring about positive change; and chairman and co-CEO of United Therapeutics Corporation and president and CEO of its Lung Biotechnology Public Benefit Company Dr. Martine Rothblatt was honored with the Lifetime Leadership Award for dedicating her entire life and line of work to motivate women to reach their dreams, find the strength to fight, the power to survive and the leadership to inspire.

Each honoree received $50,000 from The Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation, in support of the organization (U.S. 501c3) in which they are affiliated to further their work. They were also recognized at a special awards ceremony at the United Nations Headquarters at the Women in the World Conference.

Among the attendees were presenters Allison Williams, Isha Sesay, Liya Kebede, Barry Diller, Olivia Palermo and Johannes Huebl, Norah O’Donnell, as well as notables Alex von Furstenberg, Talita von Furstenberg, Tatiana von Furstenberg, Steven Kolb, First Lady of New York City Charlene McCray, Jessica Joffee, Hailey Benton Gates, Mia Moretti, Randi Zuckerberg, and Sir Harry Evans.

“This event is an absolute high point of women in the world,” said Brown. “Today, there are women on every continent who thanks to this award are able to touch more lives than ever before.”
