Last Tuesday, the Animal Medical Center honored some very special pups and the humans who love them. More than 500 animal lovers descended on Cipriani 42nd Street, including Kathie Lee Gifford, Clive Davis, Elaine and Kenneth Langone, Henry and Nancy Kissinger, Katharine and William Rayner, Barbara and Robert Liberman, Emilia Krimendahl and Georgina Bloomberg, who was honored with the Animal Medical Center’s Brooke Astor Award.

“The Brooke Astor Award was created to recognize an individual who, in word and deed, emulates Mrs. Astor’s ideals and values to preserve and protect the human-animal bond, and Georgina is a true example of her legacy,” said Robert Liberman, chairman of the Animal Medical Center’s Board of Trustees. “Georgina’s passion for and steadfast commitment to helping animals is second only to her generous spirit.”

Kathryn Coyne, Animal Medical Center CEO, echoed those sentiments. “Georgina Bloomberg exemplifies the profound impact that one individual can have on the lives of those creatures who cannot advocate for themselves,” she said. “She has committed time, energy, philanthropy and her voice to the cause of animal welfare.”

But the evening’s biggest guest of all was a handsome little hero named Mitchell, a tracking, patrol and narcotics dog with the Jamestown, New York Police Department’s SWAT team. Mitchell was injured in an incident in 2016, but helped save four different people with his heroism. His bravery led to the passage of “Mitchell’s Law,” which makes it a felony to injure a K-9 officer. Not bad, pooch!

Since 1910, the Animal Medical Center has been one of the world’s premier animal hospitals. Last week’s event helped raise more than $1.7 million.
