Tuesday evening the Apollo Theater on West 125th Street celebrated 80 years of artistic innovation and community engagement. The annual spring gala served as the celebration ground for the Institution’s 80th birthday and featured performances by Natalie Cole and The Isley Brothers. It was hosted by comedian Wayne Brady.

The proceeds from this year’s gala will support the nonprofit theater’s year-round programming. In honor of 80 years of accomplishments, the event spotlighted eight decades of artistic transformation on the Apollo stage.

Due to its support of the Apollo, Bank of New York (BNY) Mellon, a multinational banking and financial service corporation, was honored at the gala. Chairman and CEO of BNY Mellon Gerald Hassell accepted the Theater’s Corporate Award on the company’s behalf.

The Apollo Board of Directors Chairman Richard Parsons was honored for his longstanding service to the Theater.

Founded in 1991, the Apollo Theater Foundation, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving and developing the legendary Apollo Theater through the Apollo Experience of world-class live performances and education programs that honor the influence and advance the contributions of African-American artists and advance emerging creative voices across cultural and artistic media.

Apollo’s vision is to expand the reach of the Apollo Experience to a worldwide audience. The Theater is a source of pride and gratification and symbol of the outstanding talent of American artistic success.

VIPs who attended the gala included Apollo Theater Foundation President and CEO (ex officio) Jonelle Procope, Gerald Hassell and his wife Agnes, Debra Shriver, Matthew Whitaker and Roland Martin.
