Rose Hartman, the ubiquitous eccentric known for her intimate photographs of New York’s rich and famous from the disco era to the present, will be the subject of a retrospective show, The Infamous Rose Hartman, at Asher Edelman’s The Edelman Arts Gallery (111 East 70th Street). The exhibition opens on November 20 (and runs through December 20) and features some of Hartman’s best shots.

Growing up in lower Manhattan, Hartman says, she devoured the monthly Vogue, enthralled with a world of style she never thought she could be a part of. It wasn’t until after she had graduated college with a liberal arts degree from New York’s City College that she understood her love of photography.

“Striking, sylphlike women and stylish men were my willing subjects. What most excited me was the opportunity of covering the joy and spontaneity of all the guests, whom I never asked to pose–apractice that I have continued more than 35 years,” Hartman writes about covering events in notes on her career, My World.

From the beautiful black and white image of Nan Kempner and Kenneth Jay Lane to Henry Kravis at Sotheby’s, Hartman’s candid photographs have opened a door onto the private world of New York society and its personalities.

“Combing through my archives, I realized that I had a treasure trove of stylish duos-both iconic images and those that had never been published–images that are natural, and fly-on-the-wall intimate.” Hartman writes.

Hartman’s work has appeared in The New York Times, London Sunday Times, Vanity Fair, Vogue (US, French, Dutch, and Italian), New York Magazine, Marie Claire, Allure, Elle, BBC.com, Grazia, Le Journal de la Photographique, The Daily Beast, W and Rolling Stone among other numerous international publications.
