On Friday night, Edelman Arts celebrated the opening of a photo exhibit, The Infamous Rose Hartman, at what was also the opening of its new headquarters in a townhouse at 111 East 70th, and a homecoming of sorts for proprietor Asher Edelman and his wife Michelle, CEO of Traffic, a creative agency for photographers and illustrators. They’d moved from their former Upper East Side home to new premises near Gramercy Park, but have now returned to their old stomping grounds.

Guests at the fete for Hartman and the Edleman were a mix of uptown and downtown, artists and social figures, including Jackie Weld Drake, Janis Savitt, Peggy Stephaich Guinness, Christophe von Hohenberg, Roy Kean, Ron Ferri, Christopher Mason, Michelle Stein, Omar Hernandez, Jean Shafiroff, Jenny Capitain, Bara and Roger de Cabrol, Dustin Pittman, Lorry and Mark Newhouse, Drt. Penny Grant, Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia, Nabil Nahasd, Anthony Haden-Guest, Sylvia Martins Niarchos, and Alain Degrelle.

Asher Edelman, then a financier, began collecting in the early 1960’s and by the mid 1980’s, had accumulated a prestigious art collection that included such icons of the art world as Jasper Johns, Brice Marden, Cy Twombly, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, John Chamberlain, Lucio Fontana, and Keith Haring.

In 1991, he opened FAE, Musée d’Art Contemporain in Lausanne, which presented the first European retrospectives of seminal contemporary American artists, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Mapplethorpe and Peter Halley as well as  “Picasso Contemporain,” an exhibition of the artist’s post war work , and a group exhibition, “Post Human,” co-curated by Chantal Prod’Hom and Jeffrey Deitch , that helped define a new figurative movement with artists such as Paul McCarthy, Matthew Barney, Mike Kelley, Cindy Sherman, and Jeff Koons.

Today, Edelman Arts specializes in the secondary market sales and placement of art works while continuing to curate exhibitions. Among its holdings are works by Fritz Bultman, Paul Cezanne, Joseph Cornell, Gunther Forg, Sam Francis, Helen Frankenthaler, Alberto Giacometti, George Grosz, Keith Haring, Robert Indiana, Franz Kline, Jannis Kounellis, Willem de Kooning, Roy Lichtenstein, Edouard Manet, Brice Marden, Nabil Nahas, Jules Olitski, Pablo Picasso, Larry Rivers, Will Ryman, David Salle, Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, Robert Wilson, and Christopher Winter.

Through its affiliates, Artemus and Art Assure LLC, Edelman Arts also offer access to investment quality artworks, prior to reaching the public market, and advises clients on purchases and sales of artwork.

But none of that was on the mind of the revelers at the Edelemans rose-tinted art-warming.  Uptown and downtown mixed beneath a bold and unusual African-themed Haring canvas to fete the photographer whose work lined the walls, luring guests to tour most of the couple’s elegant new home and office.
