The morning before his 77th birthday on September 10th, Karl Lagerfeld and his model/muse/constant sidekick Baptiste Giabiconi visited the Whitney Museum. Later that night, Lagerfeld hosted an enormous party at the Chanel Store on Wooster Street to celebrate the re-done SoHo location, which now has a “handbag bar” and sells exclusive items only to be found at Chanel SoHo.

The corner of the boutique’s building was covered with a 10-foot high LED screen that flashed Lagerfeld’s photos of the neighborhood to a huge crowd of fans that waited on the sidewalk for a glimpse of the king of fashion. Lagerfeld arrived (with his other constant companion, his super handsome bodyguard Sebastian Jondeau) and a stampede of celebrity pals like Diane Kruger, Liv Tyler, almost all of the Gossip Girl cast (Chase Crawford, Blake Lively and Leighton Meester), Sarah Jessica Parker, Ruben and Isabel Toledo, Elle’s Robbie Myers, Julia Restoin Roitfeld and Leigh Lezark, to name a few.

Alexa Chung played great music, but the most fun was the digital spray cans that guests could use to write on a huge computer-like screen inside the tented entrance. Of course, someone wrote “Happy Birthday Karl” and Chanel’s interlocked double Cs were a very popular tag. After cocktails, Lagerfeld hosted an intimate dinner at 82 Wooster, which he turned into a secret one-night only Chanel salon.
