Chanel’s new milliner: Gigi Burris

Thursday, July 28, 2011

Chanel has a new PYT on board–only this time, she’s behind the scenes. The fashion house just named 23-year-old Gigi Burris head of their millinery division.

Burris is no stranger to Paris (she studied there for a year) and she’s certainly no stranger to hatmaking. After her time across the pond, she returned to New York and studied under couture milliner Leah Chalfen. 2009 first brought a BFA  from Parsons School of Design, then came a nomination for the Designer of the Year award, then her one-of-a-kind hats and made-to-order ready to wear began gracing the pages of major glossies (including Elle, Harpers Bazaar, Interview and Vogue Italia).

As her inspirations, Burris sites legends such as Jeanne Lanvin and Gabrielle Chanel, who also began their fashion careers as milliners. Following in their footsteps? Not a bad gig for a 23-year-old. . .or any one for that matter.

Hats off to you, Gig! Au Revoir!
