Cinema Society screens “Shadow Dancer” with Afterparty at Owen’s Dinner Club

Wednesday, June 5, 2013

Anticipating a bevy of summer affairs, stars as hot as the smoldering temperatures came to the Cinema Society and Magnolia Pictures premiere of Academy Award winning director James Marsh’s “Shadow Dancer” at the Landmark Sunshine Theater. The climactic thriller, starring Clive Owen, Andrea Riseborough and Aidan Gillan, is set in 1990s Belfast and focuses on a member of the IRB (Riseborough) and her radically Republican family. When she is arrested for her part in an aborted bomb plot, she chooses to become a spy for the M15, the United Kingdom’s secret service, so she can return home and protect her son’s welfare. However, this act of betrayal puts her and her family in imminent danger.

Sponsored by Blackberry, the powerful screening, attended by the films stars (Owen, Riseborough and Gillan) generated positive feedback from notable guests, including Russell Simmons, Paul Haggis, Zachary Quinto, Felicity Jones, Celine Rattray and Nanette Lepore.

After the screening, guests made their way to the after party at Omar’s dinner club on West 9th. Partygoers sipped on Red Bull, Qui tequila cocktails and drinks named after the film (easily enough, “Shadow Dancer” and “The Belfast”). In the spirit of celebration, Cinema Society founder Andrew Saffir surprised his boyfriend Daniel Benedict with a birthday cake to top off the enjoyable evening.
