On Monday, October 31, The American Friends of the Oxford Philharmonic launched the U.S. Premier Concert featuring violinist Maxim Vengerov. Vengerov is considered the greatest violinist of our time and a pride of the Russian classical music world. Nice to see that Vladimir Putin couldn’t keep everything in Russia down. The event was held at New York’s elite Metropolitan Club.

Maxim and principles from the Orchestra performed Mendelssohn’s Octet for Strings and Brahms Violin Sonatas Nos. 1-3, followed by a black-tie seated dinner.

The Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, as its name would suggest, is Oxford’s professional symphony Orchestra, and the Orchestra in Residence at the University of Oxford. They perform in the intimate environment of Sir Christopher Wren’s seventeenth-century Sheldonian theater where Hayden himself conducted in 1774. Unique to this Orchestra is the master classes offered to Oxford students.

The American Friends of the Oxford Philharmonic was formed to bring the Oxford Philharmonic to the United States, with an established concert series beginning in 2018. What took place Monday night was just a small sample of what’s to come.

Attendees at the event included royal patrons HRH Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, co-chairmen Lord Patten of Barnes CH PC and James Sherwood, dinner vice chairmen Dafna Meitar-Nechmad and Ann Nitze, Noreen and Kenneth Buckfire, Jackie Drake, Emily Frick, Mai Harrison, Amb. & Mrs. Andrew Jacovides, Christina Keesee, Lady Kenny, HRH Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, Patricia Kluge, Margo Langenberg, Spiros Milonas, Diana Quasha, HE Amb. & Mrs. Matthew Rycroft, Susan and Elihu Rose, Sana Sabbagh, Daisy Soros, Barbara & Donald Tober and Saundra Whitney.
