OUR CRUSHES: ZIP IT

Tuesday, March 8, 2011

My fixation with this neckace is manifold. Firstly, my love of all things Van Cleef & Arpels runs deep, mostly for the master-crafted vintage pieces like the Zip necklace (originally created for a historically known jewel-aholic, the Duchess of Windsor). I ran across it the other day in the “flesh” at Fiona Druckenmiller’s new boutique; a veritable treasure trove of provenanced jewelry and eye-popping objet garnered from the far corners of the earth and assembled under one chic little roof on East 65th Street.

Ms. Druckenmiller’s knowledge of each piece she offers for sale is spellbinding as is her personal affection for them, so much so that I wonder how she can stand to watch them leave the boutique in her chic purple boxes. That night I spied this necklace dripping down the back of British actress Eve Best in her role as party-loving, champagne-gulping Wallis Simpson in Oscar-sweeper “The King’s Speech”. Lastly, a trip to The Cooper Hewitt’s exhibition, “Set in Style; The Jewlery of Van Cleef & Arpels”, where this iconic piece is prominently displayed, completely confirmed my current crush!
