Exclusive: INSIDE The Vanity Fair Oscar Party!

Monday, February 28, 2011

The AVENUEinsider is exhausted from all the neck craning and room lapping we did last night at the Vanity Fair Oscar party held at the Sunset Tower Hotel. Vanity Fair has trimmed the guest list down big time but the tented room (with fabulous huge white globes on the ceiling) was wall to wall movie star madness. “I’m going on vacation tomorrow with my parents,” the hotel’s owner Jeff Klein told us. “Cambodia and Vietnam. It will be a nice break.” And a much deserved one as the VF party is probably the biggest, most glamorous event to pull off.

As we entered we almost ran over tiny Justin Bieber. The pop star was grabbed by music writer Lisa Robinson (who did the VF cover story on him) and introduced to Graydon and Anna Carter by the bar. Bieber then hit the Vanity Fair photo booth where a photographer tried to snap his pic, having his pic taken. “Justin isn’t doing photos in the photo booth,” his handler announced. Talk about a surreal photo op.

Inside we saw nominee Michelle Williams arrive and announce that she was “starved.” She then grabbed about half a dozen tuna tartare appetizers from a waiter. Carolina Herrera hugged Cameron Diaz who was wearing her design and then Diaz squeezed Gwyneth Paltrow who was in shimmery Michael Kors. Then Paltrow hugged Elizabeth Saltzman. Hollywood hugfest!

As the winners arrived from the Governor’s Ball, the night got even more star-studded, if that is even possible. Liv Tyler told us “It’s so fun to be at this party with my dad,” as she stood with Steven Tyler. Nearby Mick Jagger and girlfriend L’Wren Scott talked to Tom Ford and Lisa Eisner. Lynn Wyatt said that she was getting her second wind. “I arrived in L.A. on Saturday and went straight to the hotel and changed and went to Diane von Furstenberg and Barry Diller‘s lunch (the AVENUEinsider was there too). “It’s been non-stop since then and I’m having a ball.” We need to borrow some of the super chic Wyatt’s energy and bottle it for next year.

In a very un-L.A. way, there were cigarettes and smoking was allowed anywhere and everywhere. “This is the only night where anything goes,” a bartender allowed as people lit up. Zoe Saldana got that memo and immediately sparked up a ciggie after doing the red carpet. Of course where there is a red carpet, there are fashion designers and we loved seeing Tory Burch, Georgina Chapman, Rachel Roy, Jason Wu and Valentino. Speaking of style, singer Rufus Wainwright (with designer Zaldy) announced that he was in a Tom Ford Hawaiian print tux jacket. “I think – I hope – I’m the only one wearing this jacket here tonight,” Wainwright said.

Around midnight, waiters passed mini banana puddings and cupcakes with the names of nominees (we wolfed down two “Nicole” red velvets and of course a “Natalie” as who doesn’t love a winner). “The Social Network” screenwriter Aaron Sorkin not only shook our hand but let us touch his golden Oscar. Must not wash hands for at least a few hours!

As midnight passed, Tom Ford grabbed Lisa Eisner by the hand. It was after-party time and slews of super famous faces were off to Madonna and Demi Moore‘s party at Guy Oseary‘s house way up in the hills. As we were leaving Tom Hanks was standing by the door. “I think I can just stay here and see everyone I know,” Hanks said. It was like Hanks was St. Peter greeting celebrities as they entered Hollywood heaven. He smiled warmly at everyone – whether he knew them or not. And of course, in Hollywood Madonna is a Goddess. So her party is yet just another slice of heaven – but with a huge dose of disco dancing.
