Their teacups runneth over with cultural heritage, but that doesn’t mean Bernardaud will be celebrating its sesquicentennial anniversary indulging the nostalgic cult of the past. The connoisseurs of savoir-faire have reaffirmed their dedication to modernity in their 150th year by collaborating with contemporary artists including David Lynch, Marlène Mocquet, Michael Lin, Jeff Koons, Sophie Calle and Michael Brambilla. The Limoges porcelain house has asked each artist to design a six or twelve-piece dinner set and has opened a corresponding Chelsea boutique to exhibit the expanding collection. The artists responded diversely. The idea of a set lends itself to a series which progresses narratively; Lynch tells a story over his twelve plates: the drawings of Boundless Sea are abstract, haunted by the distinctly Lynchian phantoms of a broken America. Sophie Calle foregoes imagery in her autobiographical, text-based narrative; across her 12-piece set she recounts the story of a rather alarming afternoon. Mayor Bloomberg and other Luminaries Fete El Museo del Barrio

We at AVENUEinsider have been keeping ourselves busy with what is known about town as “gala season” – which kicks into high gear right after New York fashion week and continues straight through Memorial Day. But, alas, all good things must come to an end – and the El Museo del Barrio annual Gala has for years marked the traditional close to that whirlwind of charity fetes. This year was no different. Held this Thursday at Cipriani 42nd Street, the Gala – which drew the likes of Fe and Alessandro Fendi; Board President Yaz Hernandez; Eleanora and Michael Kennedy; Kamie Lightburn; Dayssi Olarte de Kanavos; Narciso Rodriguez; Junior Council Chair Christine Miller Martin; Jean and Martin Shafiroff; and a cameo appearance by Mayor Michael Bloomberg – raised more than one million dollars for the museum. Bad Boy: Fischl’s Memoir

Artists, actors, rock stars, writers, and collectors were all spotted at Mary Boone gallery on Tuesday night to toast Eric Fischl’s memoir, Bad Boy. Steve Martin – who contributed to the book – provided the major sighting of the evening; other notable attendees included Roger Waters, E.L. Doctorow, Will Cotton, Ron Rifkin, Griffin Dunne, Andres Serrano, Lally Weymouth, Peter Duchin, Fischl’s co-author, Michael Stone, Fisch’s wife – the artist April Gornik as well as his art dealer Mary Boone. Fischl’s paintings now hang everywhere from the Met to the Whitney, but like many success stories, his early years were not so easy. Bad Boy chronicles those struggles, beginning with an alcoholic mother who committed suicide. From there, he studied at the legendary Cal Arts school, met landscape artist and future wife April Gornik and emerged as one of the three major artists of the 1980s. Tuesday evening, renowned jewelry designer Judith Murat, creator of House of Murat, celebrated the release of her gold-leaved hardcover book, Judy’s Journey Into the Land of Murat with a private-book signing soiree cum trunk-show to benefit Alzheimer’s Association at the penthouse home of Andrea and John Stark. Hosts Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, Muffie Potter Aston, and Somers Farkas welcomed friends and supporters the likes of Geoffrey Bradfield, Jean Shafiroff, Michele Gerber Klein, Cole Rumbough, Cassandra Seidenfeld, Elaine Sargent, Joanna Mastroianni and Maggie Norris. Murat signed books with co-author Charles (Sunny) Castor for friends including Stephanie Conrad, Christine Schott, and Liliana Cavendish, while Susan Jacob provided stylist Alison Lang and Sharon Bush with a preview of Murat’s latest collections. Tuesday night was a bustling one at Bergdorfs, where Martha Stewart Weddings’ Celebrations Expert Darcy Miller hosted the launch of Event Designer David Stark‘s latest book The Art of the Party, and the premiere of Paper Tales, a collection of one-of-a-kind art pieces created exclusively for Bergdorf Goodman by David Stark design. Linda Fargo; Robert Verdi; Angel Sanchez; Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch; Caryn Zucker; Adam Glassman; Mary Vertin; and Millie Martini Bratten were among the many boldfacers who paid a visit to BG’s seventh floor to sip some rosé wine (it is almost summer, after all), to get their books signed, and to watch the Avalon Jazz Band, which proved so popular that they continued to play well past the official 8pm end time. Tonight and Friday at 10:45 PM, Yanna Avis plays the last of her shows this month in the Café Carlyle’s Second Act series of late night performances. The lanky Paris-born chanteuse, best-known to New Yorkers, perhaps, as the widow of Warren Avis of the rent-a-car Avises, tries harder even though she really doesn’t have to. Her sporadic performances around New York have attracted a loyal fan base of stars and sophisticates, including Liza Minnelli and Rex Reed (shown with Avis at a performance earlier this month). They’re lured in by her smokey vocalizations of great cabaret tunes by the likes of Cole Porter, Kurt Weill, Michel Legrand, Cy Coleman and more. Scientific Sisterhood

On May 9th the Rockefeller University hosted its 16th Annual Women and Science Lecture and Luncheon. Founded in 1997, this initiative fosters a notion of scientific sisterhood and nexus of support; championing women’s health, women’s contributions to science and endorsing scientific research as a focal point for female philanthropy. This year’s guest lecturer was Rockefeller professor and renowned neurobiologist Cori Bargmann, Ph.D, leader of President Obama’s major national brain research initiative. Illustrious guests included: Samantha Boardman Rosen, M.D., Sydney R. Shuman, Tory Burch, Lulu C. Wang, Lydia A. Forbes, Isabel P.
