Dress to impress for a cause! Monday night’s Couture Council gala at Cipriani 42nd Street raised over $1 million for the Fashion Institute of Technology Educational Development Fund.

The night celebrated George Kaufman, Ann Taylor’s Kay Krill, and W magazine’s editor-in-chief Stefano Tonchi for dedicating years of heart to the institution.  The award ceremony kicked off with supermodel Karolina Kurkova, who presented Krill, the president of ANN INC. with her award. She made a surprise announcement that ANN INC. would be establishing an annual scholarship to FIT “forever and ever”. Next, close friend Tony Bennett honored Kaufman with an award for his longtime dedication. Finally, Jessica Chastain—twice a W cover girl, including on Tonchi’s first cover as editor of the publication, presented the ever-talented editor with his award. He graciously accepted, explaining that he had to overcome a slight midlife crisis when he first became aware that he was “old enough to be honored for his work”. He also said that he hopes his daughters—two-year-old twins with partner David Maupin—might be talented enough to go to FIT one day.

Guests were mesmerized by the display of a cinematic masterpiece created by Jennifer Steinkamp known as Orbit Art Work. With a guest list over 500, it should come as no surprise how many a-listers AVENUEinsider was able to spot. Other A-listers included, Lisa Perry, Lauren Santo Domingo, Marisa Pucci, Linda Fargo, Francisco Costa and Valerie Steele.

Exciting attendees also included top fashion design graduates of FIT’s 2013 graduating class. Among the talented graduates are Jae Lee and Carly Rosenbrook for sportswear, and recipient of the “Best Use of Cotton Award” Emily Levine.

The collected funds will be distributed to scholarship, technology, and student affairs. Coming together for not only a common love affair for fashion but also education makes this annual night so special. Style and smarts: what a combination!
