On Valentine’s Day,  Swann Auction Galleries (104 East 25th Street) will offer an extraordinary group of photographs at a sale it calls Icons & Images: Photographs & Photobooks.

The works will be exhibited from Thursday February 9 to Saturday February 11, and again on Monday February 13 and the morning of the 14th.  The sale commences that afternoon at 1:30 PM.

The offerings range through the history of photography, from mid-19th Century Daguerreotypes through lots of rare, autographed books by the late Richard Avedon from the collection of his agent, Robbie Lantz, to a group of twenty-two large format images from various NASA missions into outer space, including lunar landscapes, astronauts floating in space, and the Earth seen from outside its atmosphere.

Photographers include Ansel Adams, Diane Arbus, Margaret Bourke-White, Alexey Brodovitch, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Larry Clark, Edward Curtis, Robert Doisneau, Harold Edgerton, Louis Faurer, Robert Frank, Nan Goldin, Peter Hujar, Andre Kertesz, George Platt Lynes, Helmut Newton, Gordon Parks, Edward Steichen, Weegee, and Edward Weston.
