Heated Driveways: Hack for Hamptons Winter

Don’t you have better things to do on a snowy morning than to shovel your own driveway? Isn’t there a more productive use of your time—and energy—than to wait for a plow service to rid your Hamptons home or Brooklyn brownstone of nature’s icy debris?

No one enjoys this aspect of wintery months. If this were a perfect world, your driveway could just heat itself.

Luckily, in New York, it can do just that.

Heated driveways can completely eliminate any effort needed in the coming blizzards. The common irritations of December, January and February can return to whatever they normally were prior to the snowfall.

As long as the power doesn’t go out.

Underneath the pavement, you can install the same type of system as your indoor floor heating system, with electric currents warming the driveway above; or a series of tunnels pumping hot water .

Either way, it’s a win-win.

That weather report calling for a nor’easter will no longer cause panic attacks. The stress of waiting for someone to salt the property will not keep anyone up at night.

Certain heated driveways even have installed sensors, so no need to even track the weather report in order to turn the heater on in advance. The pavement will take care of everything.

The cost of this magical savior depends on the size of the driveway. For about $14 to $21 per square foot, the entire price of demolishing your winter anxiety (for a 20 by 50-foot driveway) might only be about $15,000. Or more.

When you become addicted to such a lifestyle, you might also consider heated stairs, heated entrances to your home or even heated sidewalks. The property will never have to deal with the physical toll of salt before a storm or the screeching of plows over the pavement, and you will never have to pick up a shovel ever again.

You: 1. Winter: 0.

Of course, you’ll have to figure out how to get to work through the snowy streets yourself. We can’t solve all your problems.
