Holiday Hair: What’s in Style for 2017

Thursday, December 14, 2017

Holiday party season is in full swing, ushering in days spent prepping celebrations with friends and family. The hunt for the perfect outfit may have taken days—or even weeks, but the look isn’t complete without the proper hairstyle.

Nunzio Savino has been cutting hair in his eponymous Upper East Side salon (130 East 65th Street) for over 20 years, where he draws on the artistic inspirations of both his Italian heritage and New York City fashion. Here, he offers his tips on hair trends for 2017:

Can you talk about popular hair styles for holiday 2017?

What’s in now is a combination of twists and braids, which make the style fun and a bit less formal. There’s a look of disheveled elegance with something like an old-fashioned French twist, in combination with other styles. For people who want to wear their hair down, waves are more popular than straightened hair, and that can be accomplished with a texturizing spray.

The hair should also go with the event. Unless you’re attending a wedding or a black tie function, it’s trendy to be somewhat casual with your hairstyle.

How should people with shorter hair style it?

If your hair isn’t long enough for a pulled-back twist, you can always play with the sides and incorporate a twist there. Or, a good alternative to just add waves and texture. That can create a completely different look that’s also more festive.

Any tips for people to take down their hair, after a night out?

The hair should never be overdone. So, the easier it is to put up, the easier it us to take down.

What color trends are in?

For the fall, we got into the warm tones using balayage. The once-popular ombre color styles are on their way out, because balayage gives the same effect but is longer lasting. Highlights only have a 6- to 8- week lifespan, but you can do balayage once every 6 to 8 months, because it grows out beautifully.
