Hot Spot Desmond’s Nod to Gino’s

The Bathroom at Desmond's

The AVENUEinsider misses Gino’s, the no-frills Italian restaurant that was a favorite of everyone from preppy packs of families to Frank Sinatra to Ralph Lauren and Greta Garbo. The red zebra wallpaper was legendary as were the old-school waiters and the menus in which the prices were changed by crossing out the old price and penciling in the new one (usually a buck or so more).

When Gino’s closed due to rent hikes (it will soon be a Sprinkles cupcake shop) we had our last lunch there on their last day and remembered being five years old and telling Mom to please take us again to the “zebra restaurant” for spaghetti.

Just around the corner from the old Gino’s is a new UES it-spot: Desmond’s. The sleek restaurant, just across the street from Bloomingdale’s has already hosted dinners for Euan Rellie, Jamie Johnson‘s Black Sweater label and Alexander Olch. The chics are making Desmond’s their new hang-out – so book a table fast.

And we love that Desmond’s gives a nod to Gino’s with their own zebra wallpaper in the bathroom. We will forever miss Gino’s but are thrilled to welcome Desmond’s to the hood.
