Plagued by political turmoil for the latter part of the 20th century, Nicaragua was slow to develop and has only recently seen a boom in its tourism industry. Now, inching out from behind Costa Rica’s shadow, it is becoming the next go-to Central American destination. In many ways, the country is, for the moment at least, Costa Rica’s cooler, lesser-known cousin. Like its neighbor to the south, it is flanked by the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean and offers access to beaches, mountains, volcanoes, lakes and the rain forest. However, as a relative newcomer to the luxury travel scene, it has the benefit of still being off the beaten path and thus relatively inexpensive. To make it even more tempting, the US dollar is accepted throughout the country.

While the road less traveled has its allure, a great hotel after a long day’s adventure is always welcome. Over the last five years, Nicaragua has added accommodations for all taste levels. At the luxury end of the spectrum there’s Mukul, a beach and golf resort on the Pacific coast, and Nekupe, a resort nestled in the mountains. For those seeking a more intimate setting, boutique hotels have popped up, too. Most notable among these is the Tribal Hotel in the colonial city of Granada, the brainchild of Jean- Marc Houmard, the restaurateur behind New York City’s Acme and Indochine, and a business partner. Located a short 50 minute taxi ride from Managua International Airport, it’s a perfect introduction to Nicaragua.

Tucked away a few blocks from Granada’s central plaza, the Tribal’s unassuming facade betrays nothing of the relaxing oasis within. Once through the front gate, guests are greeted by an open air lounging area filled with tropical plants and cozy nooks for escaping life and maybe even your newsfeed (yes, there is wifi). The courtyard, with its black and white tiled pool, is a perfect place to pause after a day of walking Granada’s colorful streets or cruising Lake Nicaragua.

The hotel’s bohemian aesthetic is enhanced by an extensive collection of carpets, textiles and objects from around the world. Each room has a private terrace where breakfast can be served. In step with the rest of the property, the rooms, seven in total, are spare but seductive, filled with Turkish kilims, Ikat upholstery, and locally made art, chairs, day beds, and tiles.
