It’s About Time…

Finally! Thursday, October 8 is a day to celebrate because philanthropist Mercedes Bass was elected as acting chairwoman of Carnegie Hall. She is succeeding billionaire and businessman Ronald O. Perelman who abruptly stepped down after an eight-month stint. Mercedes has actively been on the board for 26 years and she’s been the vice chairwoman since 2006. During Carnegie’s annual meeting of its board of trustees, Mercedes was selected to act as chairwoman while the hall searches for a new chairman.

Let’s take this moment to raise our glass. Turns out, our most sexy New Yorker list doubles as our smartest New Yorker list. As a long time arts and opera patron, this is a well overdue title for Mercedes. She also servesĀ as the vice chairwoman at the Metropolitan Opera, where the Grand Tier level bears her name. In a statement, she said she “feels privileged to assume this new post.” Here’s to you, Mercedes.
