The shows will go on! Live music returns to The Surf Lodge in Montauk tonight with the weekly Nancy Atlas Surf Lodge Wednesdays.
The live music scene has been hush-hush in Montauk since just before Memorial Day Weekend, when the Surf Lodge was found to be in violation of its license from the State Liquor Authority. The issue brought to light live music violations at other Montauk establishments, including Navy Beach, and many pre-scheduled shows around the hamlet were cancelled through the month of June.
The timing of the issue had many debating whether East Hampton Town, which includes Montauk in its jurisdiction, played a part in Surf Lodge's sanctions, as the establishment has long been at odds with the Town. The Town and Supervisor Larry Cantwell maintained that the licensing issues were strictly between the Surf Lodge and New York State.
Now, with the license in place and with town’s blessing, live music can be performed at The Surf Lodge for a two-hour period, five days a week between Wednesday and Sunday. The agreement also states that The Surf Lodge must cap capacity at 365 instead of their usual 450; and bands cannot play outdoors after 8 p.m. The increased sanctions are a part of a settlement for previous town code violations, and the concessions allowed The Surf Lodge to present a clean required to the State Liquor Authority when it went to re-apply for its license.
Montauk local Nancy Atlas and her band of merrymakers will begin the show tonight at 5 p.m. Grab a drink and watch the sunset as you take in the warm, summer vibes. A longtime friend of Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Atlas has been known to bring him onstage as a special guest.
The Surf Lodge will feature the regular Wednesday Nancy Atlas sets, as well as music by established and up and coming artists throughout the rest of the summer. Next on tap is Lucius on July 8 and Sunflower Bean on July 9. The full music schedule can be found here.
The Surf Lodge is located at 183 Edgemere Street, Montauk.
