Ruben Toledo

The AVENUEinsider is obsessed with Ruben and Isabel Toledo who we consider to be the First Couple of Fashion.

It was a thrill to have lunch at the private club Doubles with Ruben and Isabel and members of the FIT Couture Council like founder and Chairman Liz Peek.

During lunch, Ruben was led in a discussion about his amazing artwork and fashion illustrations by FIT’s Patricia Mears. You must run to get Ruben’s book “Ruben Toledo’s Fashion Almanac” which is available exclusively at Nordstrom.  Ruben spoke about leaving Cuba for America and falling in love with his designer wife Isabel at age 13. Talk about a love story. “What I do stems from what Isabel does, that’s how I learned to do fashion and fashion illustration,” Ruben said. “It all stems from that one place.” The supremely talented Isabel interjected a few times, especially when Ruben fielded questions from the room. “We don’t ever fight,” Isabel replied when asked how they keep their marriage so strong. “If we did fight, we’d have bloody noses. We disagree, but we never fight.” The AVENUEinsider has known the talented Toledos since we were a teenager and still smile when we spot them holding hands while strolling through Union Square Park.

The Couture Council is major. We had a stylish flip-out at the last CC lunch for Karl Lagerfeld which lured literally every major name in fashion. This year, the Couture Council is honoring Valentino on September 7th with a lunch at Lincoln Center hosted by Charlotte Moss and two of AVENUE’s Best Dressed List ladies: the divine Daphne Guinness and Anne Bass. Of course we will be there – with Valentino bells on.
