Margaret Russell takes over AD, Google Gets Shopping Online

Thursday, November 18, 2010

When it was announced this summer that after 35 years the legendary Editor Paige Noland would retire from helming Architectural Digest, the entire design world was a buzz with names for her replacement. Last night, the confirmation: a great welcoming of Ms. Noland’s successor (and former Editor In Chief of Elle Décor) Margaret Russell took place at Tom Coloccio’s new restaurant Riverpark on E 29th St.

Every important creature and creator of design attended demonstrating their support of this changing of the guard. The first lady of interior design Bunny Williams, fashion designer Reed Krakoff, architect Richard Meier and major designers Mario Buatta, Larry Laslo, and Thad Hayes (tasked with leading the design of Marc Jacobs new home) all attended.  The shake-up at the publication was best represented with the attendance of young design stars like Nate Berkus, Ashley Stark, and Pierre Frey.

Meanwhile, at Skylight Studios, Google launched Boutiques.com, the much anticipated fashion website. In typical/un-typical Google style, a huge lawn chessboard was set up as “alternative entertainment” for the parade of fashionista’s that attended.  Themes such as “Indian Night” and “Alice in Wonderland” took over various corners of the space, while a favorite of all the partygoers was a laser wall that allowed you to graffiti the backdrop with light.

A very svelte-looking Kelly Osborne chatted with fellow Br-It Girl Alexa Chung, while Carey Mulligan towered over The Row Designers Ashley (who recently returned from Thailand where she accompanied boyfriend Justin Bartha, who was shooting The Hangover 2) and Mary-Kate Olsen. Boutiques.com allows users to create their own online “boutiques” on the website. Anna Paquin (who attended with new husband Stephen Mayor), Sarah Jessica Parker and Olivia Palermo have all created their own boutiques online. Special fashion mentions to BryanBoy’s Mickey Mouse Ears, Emma Roberts’ sky-high heels, and Ashlee Simpson‘s new, blond cropped ‘do. Now get off your rear-end and start creating your own online boutique!
