Meet the 2011 Oscar Winners…

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

The Academy Award nominations were announced today and there were a few mild, yet not shocking surprises (Jeff Bridges doing an almost SNL-like grizzled cowboy and gifted newcomer 14-year-old Hailee Steinfeld for True Grit, the well-deserving Jeremy Renner for The Town, reliable, but not outstanding Mark Ruffalo for The Kids Are Alright and John Hawkes for Winter’s Bone – you know, that small indie flick you haven’t heard of but now must see) and three major snubs (Julianne Moore for The Kids Are Alright, Ryan Gosling for Blue Valentine and no documentary nod for the wonderful Joan Rivers film A Piece of Work).

So why don’t we just cut to the chase and tell who will win. If AvenueInsider is wrong, we owe you a dozen Oscar Mayer hot dogs, or a drink at The Boom Boom Room. Your choice.

Our predictions:

Best Picture: The Social Network (a.k.a. “the Facebook movie”)

Best Director: David Fincher, The Social Network

Best Actor: Colin Firth, The King’s Speech

Best Actress: Natalie Portman, Black Swan (and preggers Portman will surely wear a custom-made Rodarte dress that night)

Best Supporting Actor: Christian Bale, The Fighter (the rest of the nominees should get drunk because they won’t be giving an acceptance speech)

Best Supporting Actress: Melissa Leo (We can’t wait to see Helena “cotton candy hair” Bonham Carter scowl like she did when she lost the Golden Globe to Leo, who deserves the award more than anyone in this category).

Disagree with our predictions? Who do you think will win? Who do you want to win?

Let’s be in touch post-awards show on Feb. 27.
