Cheryl Donegan, Model! Pleasure! Artist! Alive! (a Surface Conversion Project) opened last week at the Missoni boutique on Madison Avenue. Angela Missoni, and her family, are enthusiastic supporters of the arts and last week, Angela, the creative director of the brand, inaugurated the newest installment of her series, curated by Francesco Urbano Ragazzi in collaboration with the Apalazzo gallery.

Angela is passionate about collecting and sharing her discoveries. The artist, Cheryl Donegan, uses a number of do-it-yourself analog and non-analog techniques to turn objects and symbols of metropolitan life into abstract art. The project aims to transform the boutique into a creative stage. The windows of the store are filled with banners created by the artist that are related to textiles, and once inside the store you will find a series of lightboxes in and around the product. The artist reconstructs the forms of urban landscapes into acid tone psychedelic visions. In a separate gallery upstairs, there are 3 screen video pieces with playing in constant rotation, surrounded by silent mysterious figures. This Conversation marries very well with the Missoni signature design codes. The business was started in the 1950’s by Tai and Rosita Missoni and today it’s a real family affair. Three generations of Missonis are now involved in all facets of the brand, and design a truly total lifestyle series of collections that prove fashion and art can complement each other.

The lightboxes and the clothing speak to each other. The Missoni signature style, created by Angela today,  is knitwear based, using bold colors in intricate patterns created with an eye for the unusual. This seasons styles exudes a carefree boho glamour that brings to mind the late 70’s, with long sweeping coats, jackets and outfits using the typical Missoni unconventional stitches and textures. These are dramatic clothes that neither overwhelm the art nor are overwhelmed by it.

The Missoni logo is also featured throughout the store, on women’s, men’s and children’s clothing. Ethnic patterns, hand crochet quilt patterns, animal prints, the famous Missoni zig-zags, plaids and striated space dyed yarns fill the space. Yet there is also a beautiful group of black and white pieces touched with accents of color for the color shy. Toss the light as air dresses as layers layer under the coats and jackets.

Business casual?  Try some vibrantly patterned suits and jackets. They are available in beautiful solid versions as well. Maybe a logo hoodie in ombred colors for a casual day? The clothing and accessories play colorful gradients against geometrics. The Missonis and the artist both think in color.
