On Thursday night, New Yorkers heralded in a new sound of music when they celebrated the arrival of Jaap van Zweden, the new music director of the New York Philharmonic.

“He has a vision for the future, and it’s full of energy,” said Philharmonic president Deborah Borda.

The program, dubbed New York, Meet Jaap, opened with a world premiere of Filament, composed by Ashley Fure; followed by Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G Major and then Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. As a surprise encore, the orchestra played Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries.

“For the audience, it’s a completely new thing,” said van Zweden of Filament, which is a modern piece. The program represented the direction that he hopes to take the Philharmonic—to give the orchestra new vitality. “Every day we have a goal. And that is to play better and better,” he said. “If you look at it long term, I think that I would like to be the orchestra of every New Yorker. To attract more people [and for] everyone to feel proud of this band.”

“I’m looking forward to [the orchestra] really entering the hearts and the minds of all New Yorkers,” echoed Borda of her vision for the future of the Philharmonic under van Zweden. “I hope to make them love the New York Philharmonic the way they’d love the Yankees or one of our teams, because [the Philharmonic] is one of the greatest teams in the world.”

Following the performance, guests enjoyed dinner inside David Geffen Hall.

Attendees included Alec and Hilaria Baldwin; Patricia Clarkson; Adriane Lenox; Jamie Bernstein; Jaap van Zweden and Aaltje van Zweden; Daniil Trifonov; Charles and Ann Johnson; Richard and Karen LeFrak; James and Margo Nederlander; Daisy Soros; Leonard and Allison Stern; John Corigliano and Mark Adamo; New York Philharmonic President and CEO Deborah Borda and Cory Toevs; and Gala Co-Chairs Marijke and Lodewijk de Vink, Leni and Peter May, Harold Mitchell AC, Didi and Oscar Schafer, Agnes Hsu-Tang and Oscar L.
