Park Avenue Armory presents “Macbeth”

Friday, June 6, 2014

Macbeth made its U.S. premiere at the Park Avenue Armory, with a stellar opening performance last night. Co-directors Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh worked hard to bring Shakespeare’s classic tale of ambition and treachery to life for what was surely a discerning audience.

Preceding the performance was a fabulous candlelit dinner for VIP guests. Attendees included Kate Beckinsale,  Jamie Tisch, Renee Rockefeller, Apple Rockefeller, Caroline and Elizabeth Callender (daughter and wife of the show’s producer Colin Callender), Amy Fine Collins and Flora CollinsEarle Altman and his wife Linda, and Queen Elizabeth II‘s Ambassador to the USA, Sir Peter Westmacott and his wife Lady Susie Westmacott. The décor was simple and elegant, consistent with the theme of the play.

Not only was Branagh playing a role behind the scenes, but he was also playing a big role on the stage. The leading role actually, alongside co-star Alex Kingston. Both were making their highly-anticipated New York debuts in this performance as the once great leader and his adored wife who incited him to sell his soul in the quest for greater power.

Macbeth is commissioned and produced by the Park Avenue Armory and Manchester International Festival in England where it had a sold-out run.
