On the eve on National Women’s Day, Tory Burch and Dawn Ostroff hosted a cocktail party at Tory’s Madison Avenue Flagship Store to toast the publication of Angella Nazarian’s new book Pioneers of the Possible: Celebrating Visionary Women of the World (www.assouline.com).

When it came to selecting the 20 women profiled in her book, the author told AVENUEinsider: “the most important thing for me was to look at women who overcame certain barriers, and also have a diversity of selection, so that there were profiles of women from all different parts of the world.”

Accordingly, the profiles range from well-known figures like Frida Kahlo, who graces the book’s cover; Ella Fitzgerald; Estee Lauder; and Martha Graham to less famous women like Iranian poet Forugh Farrokhzaad; Dharma Master Cheng Yen; Moroccan runner Nawal El Moutawakel; and Somaly Mam, founder of her eponymous foundation that fights Cambodian human-trafficking.

Philanthropist Jacqueline Novogratz, also profiled in the book, spoke at the event, which drew the likes of Fern Mallis; Martine Assouline; Donna D’Cruz; Nathalie Kaplan; Susan Fales Hill; and Amy Sacco, many of whom have been “pioneer women” in their own right.  Novogratz is the founder of the Acumen Fund, a non-profit that uses entrepreneurial approaches to solve the problems of global poverty.  Both Tory and Angella donated 20 percent of the evening’s sales to the charity.
