Chris Salgardo, president of Kiehl’s, head to Mustique for some down time.

Chris Salgardo is the president of Kiehl’s Since 1851. This fall, Kiehl’s will launch its Aromatic Blends collectionexotically scented products with aromas sourced from around the world. It’s no surprise that Salgardo, a world traveler, had a heavy hand in the collection’s creation. When Salgardo is not riding a motorcycle during the multi-day Kiehl’s LifeRide for amfAR, benefitting AIDS research, he can be found kicking back, completely relaxed and using his nose to uncover the next Kiehl’s classic.

The mystique of Mustique

My favorite place in the world is Mustique. The island itself is only three miles in diameter. With the ocean and the island flora and fauna, it’s just heaven on earth. Even when the island is full of people, you can still have so much privacy. You have to take a puddle-jumper from Barbados to get there, and as soon as I get off that plane, I let out a big exhale and then don’t think about another thing until I leave. I stay at the Cotton House. It’s the most tranquil place; the service is amazing and the food is wonderful. I always take high tea when I’m there, and sit back and listen to Bob Marley and play Scrabble. It’s just paradise.

The dog days

My favorite thing to do in Mustique is nothing! I just relax, be calm and share it with someone close. It’s about recharging. I read and spend time in the ocean. I also love to go to Basil’s Bar, and hang out with the wonderful people. Basil’s has perhaps the best West Indian food in the Caribbean. The island is great for horseback riding or renting a scooter—you definitely want to explore the island, and spend time with the locals. From time to time, I’ve seen Mick Jagger,
and Princess Anne. I saw David Bowie there once, too. Editor’s note: Prince William and Princess Kate are also patrons of the island.

Senses hard at work

I’m someone who’s very sensorial. The whiff of a certain scent or the taste of a certain food will immediately take me back to places I’ve been—the market in Morocco; the local taverns in Spain. These are the types of memories I wanted to evoke when we created our Aromatic Blends Collection. If you’ve been to Morocco, just a spray of Orange Flower & Lychee will take you back, and if you’ve not yet been, it’ll transport you there instantly. Tokyo is one of my most favorite places on the planet, so our Nashi Blossom & Pink Grapefruit fragrance, inspired by Japan, is very near and dear to my heart.

Look good, feel good

My absolute favorite item [purchased while traveling] is a red cashmere blanket from Hermès that I picked up in Paris. I love to
travel with it—I wrap myself up in it and it’s like a little piece of home. Even where there are tears, I can’t imagine patching it up. I can’t travel without Kiehl’s Rosa Arctica Youth Regenerating Cream. It keeps my skin in perfect condition.

All packed up

I have been traveling with my Louis Vuitton luggage for 30 years. It’s beaten up and scratched, and I never go anywhere without it. It travels so well! I always travel with one bag—one suitcase and then one carry on. Packing is easier when you’re going someplace where all you need are shorts and t-shirts, and my iPad stores all my books, so I’m set.
