Rebecca Taylor returns to her home in New Zealand for a getaway

Rebecca Taylor struck retail gold when she launched her eponymous label, alongside business partner Elizabeth Bugdaycay, back in 1997. Since then, Rebecca Taylorthe labelhas made its way into the most stylish of closets. Women adore the line for its soft silhouettes, feminine day dresses, and flowing blouses. Rebecca Taylorthe womanlives in New York with her husband and three children but is originally from half a world away: Wellington, New Zealand, to be exact. She spent this past holiday season in her homeland and made sure to write back to AVENUE during her time there.

Return to her roots

New Zealand is my favorite place to travel to in the world. It’s where I grew up, and I feel like you always feel a connection to the place you came from.

Favorite places: Kiwi edition

I go to Wellington, New Zealand, which is my hometown. I also like to visit Greytown, a vineyard area of NZ.

When I go back to New Zealand with my husband and three children, it’s usually to get away from the craziness of New York and spend time with my parents and siblings, who all live there. I like to relax, swim, and hang out with family.

To-do list:

I would definitely recommend that New Zealand visitors eat lots—the food is amazing there! The Chocolate Fish in Miramar (a suburb of Wellington) is a favorite; my must-have is the sweet corn fritter sandwich. Also, make sure to shop at fun local boutiques for sheepskin, skin products, and wine—Sheepskin Warehouse never fails to make my heart skip a beat!

Back to real life

Traveling, and my surroundings in general, are a huge inspiration for my collections. Whether it’s New Zealand, Japan, Paris, London, Turks & Caicos, or New York . . . I am constantly inspired by the people, architecture, and artwork of the places I go.

The best souvenir

My favorite relic from anywhere I have visited is my Chanel jacket from Rue Saint–Honoré in Paris—a big treat for when I turned 40.

Pack ‘n’ roll

The one big rule of packing is if you haven’t worn an item in the last six months, don’t pack it! Also, roll everything in your luggage and hang it in the bathroom with hot water [turned on, in the shower] so the steam drops out any creases.

Never leave home without:

My Kindle and my gray cashmere travel set—it’s so cozy for long trips. I also have a bit of a lip balm addiction—Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge for Lips in Powder Pink is my go-to—it helps on flights.
