AVENUE cover star Hamish Bowles, the dashing, dapper writer/curator/fashion collector and not to mention European Editor of Vogue was awarded the 2011 Pratt Institute Fashion Icon Award last night by his friend Diane Von Furstenberg.

The front row of the Metropolitan Pavilion was filled with fashion forces like Anna Wintour, Catherine Malandrino, Lynn Yaeger, Mark Holgate, Hal Rubenstein, Stefan Campbell, Toone Goodman, Mary Kate Steinmiller, Devorah Rose and Daphne Guinness, her beautiful face swathed in a white veil.

Von Furstenberg recalled trekking to Long Island City (“I think that is where it was. I know it was far away,” she cracked) to visit Bowles’ famous collection of clothing which he started accumulating at the tender age of ten. “Hamish wore white gloves and he just kew so much about every piece, every stich,” Von Furstenberg recalled. The designer ended her introduction by sharing for the first time with the room what she has always wanted to tell Bowles: “Dare to design clothes,” she said with a huge, encouraging smile.

Bowles thanked his parents for letting their son subscribe to British Vogue as a pre-teen and also gave thanks to his colleagues and mentors Grace Coddington and Anna Wintour.

After he received his award, Bowles took his front row seat as Pratt’s graduating senior fashion design students showed their finest work.
