R.I.P. Christopher Gray, AVENUE’s First Real Estate Columnist

Christopher Gray, AVENUE‘s original Real Estate columnist, who went on to write the popular Streetscapes column for the New York Times from 1987 to 2014, died Friday at age 66. Gray’s writing, combining a deep appreciation of architecture with a taste for social history and an indefatigable researcher’s zest for knowledge, however arcane, inspired the genre of reporting now known in some circles as real estate porn. In his honor, we are republishing here his first Neighborhoods column in AVENUE‘s April 1980 issue.
