Sophie Takes L.A.

Thursday, May 17, 2012

The beauty of children is that they appreciate things exactly for what they are – with no discrimination or judgment. And so they did the Saturday before Mother’s Day, coming together at Ron Robinson|Fred Segal on Melrose, to celebrate the launch of New Yorker Kelly Florio Kasouf’s new children’s book, “The Super Adventures of Sophie and the City: All in a Day’s Work.” East met West with only one thing in mind: storytelling, on a idyllic Mother’s Day weekend.

“Sophie and the City” explores the exciting and often glamorous world of fashion and publishing with Sophie, who secretly follows her dad to work one day.  Throughout Sophie’s adventures, she runs into a fabulous cast of characters – Katharine Hepburn, Diane von Furstenberg, and Isaac Mizrahi as a Swarovski encrusted angel – but at the end of the day, she realizes that adventures are best spent with the people she loves, her family.  Kelly wrote the book in homage to her days growing up in the hallways of Conde Nast and in loving memory of her father Steven Florio, who was the CEO and President of Conde Nast for many years.

LA parents spent the afternoon treating themselves to POM’s drinks and browsed the jewelry and home decor items from the Robinson|Segal shop, as their enraptured children indulged in a book reading, Hubert’s Lemonade, and a West Coast staple, Sprinkles cupcakes.  Styling partner Chic Child, a leading online destination for the latest in children’s apparel, perfected the store’s ambiance by creating a series of fashion vignettes inspired by scenes from the Sophie story.

“I’m so honored to make my West Coast debut at the legendary Ron Robinson|Fred Segal Melrose store. There’s no better place in LA to mingle with the most fashionable mommies and budding fashionistas!” Kelly told us. “Chic child did such an incredible job styling the clothing in interesting vignettes – I can really see Sophie come to life – and working with Elizabeth Street as a media partner is the ideal platform for us all to celebrate being a mom while always remaining stylish.”

Celebrated fashion journalist and T.V. personality Amanda Luttrell Garrigus and popular L.A. designer Natalie Martin co-hosted the bicoastal bunch.

Kimora Lee Simmons; Nyakio Kamoche Grieco; Suzanne Kraus; Candace Nelson; Jennifer Shore; Annie Belanger Wehrle; Lindsay Wilhelm; and Chic Child founders Christin Rueger and Natalie Schwartz were among the stylish attendees who mixed and mingled at this pre-Mother’s day celebration.
