Dee Dee and Paul Sorvino think the best way to celebrate or solve the problems of the world, is with a nice glass of wine and a bountiful meal. And so, on Monday night at Cipriani, the drinks flowed and plates were passed to fete their new cookbook, Pinot, Pasta and Parties (Center Street), which features a Goodfellas' feast, elevated Italian street food and Paul’s famous meatballs, of course.
Hosted by their great pals, Mykalai and Veronica Kontilai, the crowd included old and new friends. Director Paul Haggis toasted the other Paul, saying, "I’ve known you for 17 minutes, but I love you!", and later told me, "I’ve always admired that guy". Paul S. responded, "OK, Topo Gigio–I’ll take it." What goes better with spaghetti Bolognese than opera? And so, by popular demand, Paul rose and expertly filled the entire, grateful restaurant with O Sole Mio.
The crowd included Kiera Chaplin (Charlie Chaplin's granddaughter) and Elettra Wiedemann (Ingrid Bergman’s granddaughter and Isabella Rossellini's daughter). Wiedemann is also a foodie, whose simple, slow cooking book will be out this spring. Another food lover of sorts, The Soprano’s Steve Schirripa, author of The Goomba Diet: Living Large and Loving it (Clarkson Potter), made a very comforting dinner partner. Other paisans included Valesca Guerrand Hermes, Judy Licht and Jerry Della Femina (also of food fame, among other things), Alejandra Cicognani, Homeland’s Hill Harper (spoiler alert–whose character is now dead), Bettina Zilkha, Zach Weiss, Alex Lundqvist, Jackie Astier, Jennifer Creel, Richard Kind, Carol Alt, Alexandra Agoston, Andrew Saffir and Daniel Benedict, and Chris Colls.
