The bag of your dreams (and ours), a one-of-a-kind solid gold cage evening clutch by Phoebe and Annette Stephens of Anndra Neen, will be auctioned off this coming Tuesday, September 23rd, at the Sotheby’s Important Jewels auction in New York.

Created in 2010, originally in Alpacca (nickel silver), the cage clutch became Anndra Neen’s signature piece, and in 2013 Carine Roitfeld commissioned the designers to create a version of the clutch in 18K solid gold for her Ultimate Gold Collection Fashion Show, benefiting amfAR at the Cannes Film Festival.

Inspiration for the cage bag came from the designer’s father, Luis Stephens, a mexican painter and sculptor who designed an aquarium that resembled the pattern of a bird cage. This creation set the precedent for their design philosophy, to create an everyday accessory that maintains its identity as an art piece.

This is the first time that Anndra Neen is participating in a fine jewelry auction, which will also feature pieces from renowned designers like Renèe Lalique, Van Cleef & Arpels, David Webb and Buccellati.
