In the midst of the pre-Christmas madness, many of us over at AVENUEinsider had begun to daydream about warm resort destinations – and specifically, what clothes we should pack for those trips. Enter designer Jules Reid; a Southern belle whose breezy, resort-chic womenswear line (launched in 2010) has gained a devoted, almost cultish following, everywhere from Harbour Island to Palm Beach. Her clothes are noted for their bright colors, graphic patterns, signature tunics and palazzo pants.

Last week, celebrity stylist and fashion editor Ann Caruso hosted an intimate breakfast and exclusive preview of the designer’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection in the Petit Salon of The St. Regis. Ms. Reid flew in from her current residence in Virginia Beach to personally meet and greet the coiterie of guests that included Avril Graham, Lucy Sykes Rellie, and Nina Griscom. The models wore all of the current looks in an informal presentation while the designer spoke with each of us over a breakfast of fresh fruit, pain au chocolat, and coffee about her design inspirations and holiday vacation plans.

An avid vintage collector for much of her life, Reid often designed pieces to wear herself during the time that she ran an interior design firm. (Before that, she spent 10 years as a Wall Street power broker). It was during those years that she honed her signature aesthetic and developed a true appreciation for bright patterns and luxurious fabrics. Not surprisingly, she’s inspired by the 60s – an era when “people liked to look fabulous even if they were just home barefoot” – and her personal icons are designers like Emilio Pucci and David Hicks. Reid designs her own patterns, sources her fabrics from India and France, and names many of her clothes after her children.

At the breakfast, she wore the McPherson – the middle name of one of her 3 sons – a long, brocade dress with a handmade floral print overlay. Like many of us, however, she is thinking about her vacation plans.

“My sons and my parents, we’re all going to the Dominican Republic for the holidays,” she tells AVENUEinsider. “It just so much easier to not have to deal with the Christmas preparations and the entertaining, and have someone else do it for you!” Plus, what better a place then the D.R. to show off her latest collection?

Already eagerly anticipating the resort season? You can find her clothes at one of 50 specialty boutiques across the country, including the Calypso stores in New York. For complete access to her lookbooks and to shop Jules Reid, go to www.julesreid.com.

Fun facts: Ann Caruso styled the lookbook for the Spring/Summer ’12 collection, and the shoes and accessories came directly from the closets of both Caruso and Reid, as well as the Palm Beach based House of Lavande. The results are looks that could have come straight out of a Slim Aarons photograph. Style inspiration, indeed.
