Old school cool was the theme at the J. Crew fall/winter 2017 presentation at Spring Studios yesterday. 62 looks—34 women’s and 28 men’s—were worn by “real people” models including designers, musicians, photographers and students, ages 9 to 67. “We decided to reimagine some iconic pieces from our heritage,” J. Crew creative director and president Jenna Lyons said in a statement. “The rugby shirt. The rollneck. The critter pant. The windbreaker. Anything tweed. And while that may seem like old hat to some, for us it’s been a refreshing approach to the staid concept of party dressing.” One of the “models,” comedian Sandra Bernhard, answered our four burning fashion week questions.

A woman’s outfit isn’t complete without: a good sense of humor!

What are runway shows good for nowadays?

It’s an important part of selling and keeping the business going. That’s how it works now and how it worked for a long time.

How would you improve fashion week?

Oh, I don’t think there’s any way to do so. It changes year to year—some years are great and some are sort of flat. They do what they need to do.

What does fashion say about America?

I think Americans have a sense of the great outdoors, relaxation and comfort more than the European sensibility. People are practical. They go to work everyday on the move and have to be able to get the trains running.
