from the pages of AVENUE’s October issue…

The Most Influential New Yorkers of 2011

In New York, creating a “short list” of the most fascinating, powerful people

that make this city whirl and twirl is no easy feat. But once again we’ve done it—and narrowed down the names to a broad mix of personalities, many whose impact extends beyond the five boroughs. Some are mainstays, some are rising stars—whether they’re altering the skyline or a hemline—these people are the ones on top. Bottom line.

James Franco

renaissance dude

James Franco, the 33-year-old California native, has taken over New York City in every aspect. First known for his acting, Franco now lists author, director, screenwriter, producer, performance artist, painter and professor under his accomplishments. This multi-talented man even enrolled in four graduate programs at once—commuting between Greenwich Village, Morningside Heights, Brooklyn and occasionally North Carolina. He’s been the host of Saturday Night Live twice and recently hosted the 83rd Academy Awards with Anne Hathaway. In 2011 alone, Franco has been in several award-winning dramatic and comedic roles such as Rise of the Planet of the Apes. What’s next? Franco for mayor?
