Vanessa von Bismarck travels to Spain and stays in true royal style

Vanessa von Bismarck is a partner at BPCMa fashion, beauty and lifestyle PR agency with offices in New York, L.A. and London. She lives in New York with her husband, Maximilian Weiner and their two sons. With a keen eye for fabulous and fashionable brands and a taste for luxury, traveling à la von Bismarck always translates to traveling in style.

Royal roots

It’s hard to pick just one destination, but I have always loved Seville, Spain for its vibrant artistic history, architecture and culture. I always stay at the Alfonso XIII, a Luxury Collection Hotel, which was built by the King himself in 1929 – I love that it’s a landmark property! The hotel just underwent a complete restoration, so its Arabic-inspired interiors and soaring towers are even more impressive now. I heard Bruce Springsteen was there in May while on tour in Spain; over the years, Ava Gardner, Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren and Brigitte Bardot have all stayed at the hotel.

¡Vámanos, vámanos!

The food throughout Seville—notably the tapas—is incredible. If I’m in the mood to sightsee, I’ll visit the Catedral de Sevilla, the world’s largest gothic building. You can’t go to Seville and not see a traditional flamenco show – the dancing and costumes are amazing and, of course, a super important part of Spain’s history. Bodega Alfonso, a chic new tapas restaurant helmed by an El Bulli alumnus, just opened in the Alfonso XIII hotel and is excellent. For people watching, I would suggest the legendary American Bar, which has signature Spanish cocktails.

Relishing the relics

A painting named “Tuesday” of a man in Vietnam which is part of a set of seven, and our new dining room table from Bali, for which we are asking the artist Adam Weiner to create a stand.

These are a few of my favorite things. Travel things, that is . . .

My Rimowa suitcase, my Longchamp bag , my Frends headphones and my Sisley sunscreen. When staying with friends, I always pack Diptyque candles – they are the best hostess gifts and so easy to pack. No matter where we go, I always bring an evening dress. Wes Gordon made me a beautiful, embroidered crème column gown that I wear with sandals at the beach or dress it up for a fancier affair.
