Welcome to the Garden of Earthly Delights

Tuesday, May 24, 2016

Oh, the beauty of nature. Last Thursday, the Museum of Arts and Design hosted an enchanting gala honoring artist Ghada Amer. Presented by Roger Vivier, the theme of the evening was The Garden of Earthly Delights, a tribute to Hieronymus Bosch’s iconic triptych from 1510 AD as well as Cicely Mary Barker’s illustrations of flora and fauna.

Trustees Mike De Paola and Linda Plattus together with co-chairs Rickie De Sole, Bettina Prentice, Alexander Gilkes, Lily Kwong and Sofia Sanchez De Betak invited guests to the celebration which included cocktails and dinner at the Neo-Federal townhouse on the Upper East Side. The space was elegantly decked out in lush greenery, deep red peonies and romantic candles—a perfect backdrop for the photos taken throughout the evening. Attendees including Harley Viera-Newton, Cleo Wade, Kate Foley and Leandra Medine arrived dressed in ‘whimsical black tie’ attire with shoes and bags by Roger Vivier.

A special toast went out to Amer, where De Paola acknowledged her work as a “fearless mix of politics, Arabic tradition and Western liberalism.” As a longtime collector of her work, he added, “it is timeless and relevant in any context.” Along with Amer’s work, pieces by artists McDermott & McGough, Andrew Brischler, Alix Smith and Sebastian Errazuriz were displayed, with additional works by Paddle8, featuring an online auction through May 31. All proceeds will benefit the Museum of Arts and Design.
