On The Avenue

Dreams, Versaille and Other Weekend Ideas

Friday, May 11, 2018

Sometimes it can be hard to figure out what to do over the weekend. In a city like New York, there are just too many options. Fortunately, AVENUE’s editors have put their collective heads together and come up with a few suggestions, ranging from a psychedelic happening to a new exhibition at the Met. What unites them all is that they’re worth your time.

Dream Machine

As part of the Red Bull Music Festival, Pioneer Works will be hosting an innovative staging of the “Dream Machine,” Brion Gysin and William S. Burroughs’ hallucinogenic light show. The performance will also feature contributions from the Morrocan Master Musicians of Jajouka and industrial musician Genesis P-Orridge.

Pioneer Works, 159 Pioneer Street, Brooklyn

Friday, May 11th at 7 and 10 p.m.

Visitors to Versailles

During the Ancien Régime, Versailles welcomed visitors from around the world—not just Americans like Franklin and Jefferson, but denizens of far-flung lands like India and Thailand. And now “Visitors to Versailles (1682–1789),” a new show at the Met, tells that story, with art, furniture and costumes from the period.

European Literature Night

Czech this one out! On Saturday, the Czech Center will host “European Literature Night,” with readings from works by authors from the Czech Republic and other European nations. In a tribute to “café culture,” these readings will be spread out through seven different rooms, and will also be accompanied by musical performances.

Bohemian National Hall 321 East 73rd Street, New York

Saturday, May 12th at 5 p.m.

Potions and Planting

Since 2011, the McKittrick Hotel has been best known as the staging space for immersive theatrical piece Sleep No More. But it has much more to offer than just that play. On Saturday, the theater’s rooftop lounge, Gallow Green, will host “Potions and Planting,” a high tea perfect for young children featuring gardening lessons, potion creation and (for adults) cocktails.

Gallow Green, 542 West 27th Street, New York

Saturday, May 12th at 10 a.m.

Mothers Day

Yes, this holiday is fake and overly commercialized. But you’ll still get in trouble for forgetting it. Get your mom or wife something special, like some books on jewelry. Or, if she doesn’t like jewels, take her out to brunch at the one place all moms will love—Jekyll & Hyde Club! Just don’t get spooked!

Jekyll & Hyde Club, 91 7th Avenue South, New York

Sunday, May 13th
