Indian Powwows, West Indian Parades and Other Weekend Ideas

Friday, August 31, 2018

Sometimes it can be hard to figure out what to do over the weekend. In New York and the Hamptons, there are just too many options. Fortunately, AVENUE’s editors have put their collective heads together and come up with a few suggestions, ranging from a Hamptons-based Native American gathering to a raucous Brooklyn parade. What unites them all is that they’re worth your time.

John McEnroe

John McEnroe is many things: tennis great, TV personality, Hamptons grandee. And now, he’s the subject of a searching new documentary, John McEnroe: In the Realm of Perfection, screening exclusively at Film Forum this weekend. And yes, we are serious!

Film Forum, 209 West Houston Street, New York

Through Tuesday, September 4th

Shinnecock Indian Powwow

One of the East Coast’s largest Native American gatherings returns to the Hamptons this weekend. At the Shinnecock Indian Powwow, enjoy dancing, drumming and more.

1 West Church Street, Southampton

Friday, August 31st through September 3rd

Hampton Classic Grand Prix

The fabulous, spectacular horse riding competition culminates this weekend with the grand prix. Riders will compete for a $300,000 prize…all while you enjoy food from more than 70 vendors.

240 Snake Hollow Road, Bridgehampton

Sunday, September 2nd at 1 p.m.

Thomas Bayrle

The technicolor creations of painter Thomas Bayrle have been on view all summer at the New Museum. And this weekend is your last chance to see them! Go, before it’s too late.

The New Museum, 235 Bowery, New York

Through Sunday, September 2nd

West Indian Parade

Though occasionally marred by acts of violence, the West Indian American Day Carnival is one of the city’s most festive occasions, with calypso dancing, costumes and delicious caribbean specialties like Roti.

Eastern Parkway between Grand Army Plaza and Schenectady Avenue, Brooklyn

Monday, September 3rd at 11 a.m.
