Back in the day, I remember being an in-demand “escort” during the New York winter debutante season. The Junior Assembly is the snobby, less is more coming out evening, but the International Debutante Ball was where the real partying went down. It’s like the Gold and Silver Ball – boozed up boys in tails and girls in dresses as big as hot-air balloons. I remember almost dropping my date as she did her gymnastic-style dip and curtsy (vodka and grapefruit and escorting debs do not mix).

In Debu-land, nothing has changed. The 56th International Debutante Ball at the Waldorf Astoria happened right before New Year’s Eve and proud parents watched as their daughters came out to society (and that doesn’t mean out of the closet!).

How White Swan is debutante Claire Crenshaw striking a skillful, triumphant pose? All that flowing fabric – are the 80s back? At the International (as the kids call it) more is more – it was like the ’80s never ended. Cue Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.”
