Oscars Snub: Why didn’t Hollywood Embrace Rodarte?

The Academy Awards showed lots of love for Black Swan, but Laura and Kate Mulleavy, the designing sisters behind the label Rodarte, were not recognized at all for the stage costumes they made for the film. To be fair, the Mulleavy sisters didn’t even get full credit as costume designers for Black Swan (Amy Nestcott did) but the confections that Natalie Portman (who is a Rodarte fan, friend and loyal customer) wore in the film really were the standout style eye candy. It’s not like Nestcott was going to get nominated for Barbara Hershey‘s crazy, domineering mom looks. But why were the ballet costumes, which relied so heavily on those Rodarte creations completely shunned by Academy voters?
