It’s A New Era at AVENUE

We are thrilled to announce that late last week, AVENUE–including our 42-year-old magazine, this web site, and all the other extensions of our brand–got the best holiday gift imaginable when it was acquired by Charles S. Cohen‘s Cohen Media Group. The AVENUE team is intact and already at work at our new offices in the Helmut Jahn-designed International Plaza at the ever-so-AVENUE intersection of Lexington Avenue and East Fifty-ninth Street.  In days and weeks to come we will be redesigning and rethinking both the magazine and this website. We will introduce new columns, features and areas of coverage and embark on new initiatives. We have cancelled our January/February issue to give us time for a world-class design team to re-conceive AVENUE’s look while we re-invent its editorial mission.  What won’t change is our dedication to covering and celebrating New York Society. The official release follows with more details.  But for now, please keep visiting avenuemagazine.com, where our often imitated but never equaled coverage of New York society, wherever it goes, will bridge our stories past and our exciting future.

On Thursday December 13th, AVENUEManhattan’s oldest society magazine, was sold by Manhattan Media LLC to Charles S. Cohen’s Cohen Media Group. Cohen Media is the fifth owner of AVENUE in its 42 years of continuous publication.

“We congratulate Charles S. Cohen on acquiring a true New York icon,” said Manhattan Media chairman Richard Burns. “We have little doubt that AVENUE will enjoy another golden age under his ownership.”

Founded in 1976, AVENUE has remained a fixture for New York’s affluent society for more than four decades. The magazine is distributed exclusively in New York’s finest residential buildings and, seasonally, in South Florida and the Hamptons.  

Though AVENUE is Charles S. Cohen’s first magazine property, it is expected that the brand will synergize well with his existing holdings. They include: Cohen Brothers Realty, owner of prestigious office buildings and design centers from coast to coast, including New York’s D&D Building and The Pacific Design Center in Los Angeles; Cohen Media Group, the Academy Award-winning distributor and producer of independent films, which also owns film catalogs, historic movie theaters and the recently acquired Landmark Theatres; and the luxury brands, including Richard James, Harrys of London, and T. Anthony.

“This purchase reflects my passion for quality in all aspects of life, and for redeveloping and re-positioning great brands,” Cohen says.  “AVENUE serves and celebrates its sophisticated and loyal readership.”

AVENUE has expanded in recent years. Edited since 2016 by New York Times bestselling author and social journalist Michael Gross, it has added a well-followed digital presence at avenuemagazine.com and beyond. Since 2012, AVENUE has produced several digital newsletters each week and exclusive events that celebrate significant philanthropy.

Six bi-monthly print issues of AVENUE will be published in 2019, including such highly-anticipated features as the magazine’s annual Power Elite and Philanthropy lists, and its web site will continue to be updated regularly from its new offices at International Plaza at 750 Lexington Avenue in Manhattan. Other changes will be introduced with the magazine’s re-introduction with the March/April 2019 issue.
